The Fashion Comeback of the Century: Skorts

Every year around this time as the temperatures start to rise and the sun emerges from behind the April rain clouds, brands begin to draw customers in with the allure of shortened hemlines and exposed skin. In the past, the staple spring and pre-summer wardrobe pieces were primarily an array of denim shorts, flow-y skirts, and espadrille sandals. But recently, with the onset of the athleisure trend and a general movement toward more comfortable, moveable clothing, brands have been forced to reassess their products to accommodate the changing weather and to keep up with consumer’s fashion tastes (who would have thought we would ever crave the early 2000’s again?!)

To confront this challenge, brands today are taking a note from the past, reviving a piece that merges the comfort we crave with the style we need. The “skort,” popularized in the 2000s by celebrities such as Rihanna, is soon to become the most coveted look this spring, offering all the comfort and flexibility of shorts with the brunch-ready appeal of a skirt. Available in fabrics ranging from denim to silk and patterns from floral to striped, there are countless ways to style this versatile garment, and practically an unlimited number of venues and events at which to wear it.

It’s really no surprise that the skort is making such a successful comeback— we simply can’t argue with the fact that a picnic on the lake is more comfortable when we can cross our legs, and a leisurely walk through the farmers market is more enjoyable when we aren’t worried about flashing small children and puppies every time a gust of wind passes by. The comfortable, yet cute look is highly sought after, so it seems only natural that we trade in our trademark black winter leggings for a staple spring skort. The best part? Instead of owning multiple skorts that all look the same (shoutout to my 10 pairs of all-black leggings) and struggling to create unique looks, you can buy a variety of skorts and never have to worry about wearing the same thing again all spring.

Skorts have become so popular this season that the bohemian cult favorite,Planet Blue, has an entire subsection of its website dedicated to the revived piece. PB offers a variety of different skort options on its site. Some complete killer two-piece sets while others still offer a more updated version that abandons the notion of a “hidden short,” and instead appears to be a skirt in the front, but looks like a pair of shorts in the back
