STITCH's Fashion Rundown of the 2018 Oscars

This year, the Oscars brought us suspense, surprise, and shockingly stunning outfits from some of the most esteemed actors, actresses, and screenwriters that have ever walked the noteworthy carpet. To kick off STITCH’s review of the best dressed on the 2018 Oscars Red Carpet, we’ll have to start with one of my personal style icons (and life icons if I’m honest)— Nicole Kidman.

Dressed to the nines in Armani Privé, Kidman’s Christian Louboutin shoes and Harry Winston jewelry only complement her already flawless ballgown. At one point during the Oscars, I noticed that when Kidman got up to speak at the microphone, the mic stand itself cut right through the center of the gown so when she speaks she embodies a “perfect” aesthetic in every sense of the word-- like an art piece.  I mean how great is this?

Up next, another favorite of mine, Timothée Chalamet from “Call Me By Your Name” dressed in a stunning Berluti suit standing there and taking breaths away left and right (although to be fair even in an old t-shirt he’d still be gorgeous).

However, Chalamet rocked the red carpet in more ways than one that night, with James Ivory,  “Call Me By Your Name”’s Oscar award-winning screenwriter, wearing a tuxedo shirt with a printed design of Chalamet’s face on it.

Next, we have Leslie Mann (the mother of a Northwestern student no less) with her husband Judd Apatow, posing in a smashing Zac Posen Resort cascading dress with Brian Atwood shoes.

The shade of red of her lipstick matching the exuberant color of the gown, Leslie looks even more fetching than her last Oscars ensemble, and that was pretty hard to beat.

In what became one of the night’s biggest surprises, Tom Holland, wearing a custom Hermès suit, proved that the infamous spiderman may have superpowers beyond some stellar climbing skills and hearing. Definitely born to wear that suit, Holland might want to start auditioning for some more James Bond type roles considering how natural that fantastic two-piece looks on him.

As if nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for “Ladybird” weren’t achievement enough, Greta Gerwig stole the damn show in a glowing Rodarte gown with Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Followed by a stunning Emma Stone in an extremely flattering Louis Vuitton pantsuit. If there was one takeaway for this years Oscars, it’s — wow— do the ladies look fierce, and wow do the ladies deserve all the accolades for their work and more.

I guess the men did okay on the fashion-front as well; Ansel Elgort, wearing a heavenly Tom Ford suit, couldn’t look more debonaire and boyishly handsome.

Although Gerwig may have done her one better on the nominations-front, Saoirse Ronan and her nomination for Best Actress for “Ladybird” pulled off a phenomenal Calvin Klein By Appointment dress, paired like Kidman with Christian Louboutins and icey Cartier jewelry. Although many have merely seen Saoirse in her angsty teen wardrobe from “Ladybird”, if one thing’s for sure, it’s that this bird has flown from premature fashion fledging to full blown couture queen. You go Saoirse, fly the nest with those pink geometric fabric wings.

In another statement piece, Paz Vega, wearing a Christopher Bu gown with Chopard jewelry on the left, looks more gorgeous than Washington D.C. in the Spring. Although the cherry blossoms featured on her dress look much more permanent and less touristy than those by the monuments, she’s a force to be reckoned with. Also looking fantastic, Zoey Deutch in an Elie Saab Couture gown and Tiffany & Co. jewelry is made even more exceptional by her 1950s style curls, shaping her perfect bone structure and complementing the ruffles of the dress.

Last but certainly not least, Chadwick Boseman in Givenchy. Although the Black Panther certainly has good taste, this superhero of style may even one up Spiderman. The artistic embroiderment tracing his lapel looks fantastic, and emphasizes Boseman’s already defined shoulders.

This awards season I think we can all agree that the fashion statements made were almost as great as the statements from the plethora of actors and actresses alike on the Oscars stage discussing race, gender, and sexuality in Hollywood. Although there is without a doubt much more work to be done, with the clothes getting better and better, I’d comically hope the social and institutional progress will keep getting better too. But in the meantime, let’s keep the Louboutins and two-piece suits coming.
