The Official STITCH Met Gala Review
Graphic by Claudia Johnson
The first Monday in May is the fashion world’s biggest night of the year, and always brings out a flurry of reviews. To cut through the fluff, here’s the only opinions on campus you really need to hear.
Claudia Johnson, Digital Managing Editor: Janelle Monae always wears something interesting, and this year’s Met Gala was no exception. She flaunted a total reimagination of a classic men’s tailored suit in bold black, white and red stripes that doesn’t even separate her arms. The look includes a striped black and white hat with an attached watch face monocle and a black briefcase within the fabric, topped off with decorative buttons, gold detailing and a short train for an extra subversive touch.
Elena Motayne, Styling Team: I found Lauren Harrier’s Met Gala look the most striking. The exaggerated wide proportions of her pants and the sheen of the fabric created a stunning contrast with the structured fit of her top and the voluminous organza sleeves. While more minimalistic than many of the evening’s other ensembles, the outfit felt cohesive and refined. Each element blended together so seamlessly and made for such an elegant outfit!
Grace Jordan-Weinstein, Co-Editor in Chief: My favorite look was Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton wore Wales Bonner which is part of a super cool movement of young designers out of London like Nicholas Daley and Charlotte Knowles. The super sharp military-inspired white suit was expertly accessorized with a beret, patent boots and shimmering ruby and diamond jewelry.
Rachel Smith, Co-Design Editor: Lauryn Hill’s sculpted, bright yellow suit was perfectly on theme. I loved the cerulean blue Hermès Kelly bag — a perfect touch of contrast that complimented the blue carpet well. The gold-encrusted fan and the yellow Benkynie umbrella were also great details. Benkyinie is a type of umbrella specific to Ghanaian culture, denoting royalty. As a Ghanaian, I was elated to see the gold jewelry by Ghanaian Emefa Cole and Ghanaian fashion designer Jude Dontoh who walked alongside Hill. As Black Dandyism is all about displaying power and identity through style, this look did all of that and then some.
Alexander Hernandez Gonzalez, Co-Editor in Chief: Out of over three hundred looks that walked the blue carpet, I’d have to say Shaboozey’s look was my favorite. Not only was it his Met Gala debut, but he got dressed by London based brand Robert Wun. The look was finely tailored and fitted to the country musician’s body and featured a vast amount of turquoise jewels draped throughout. A custom turquoise grille, David Yurman jewelry and a chic hat tied this incredible look together.
