Out With the Neutrals and in With the Neons

We are seeing it everywhere, from high-end retailers such as Canada Goose and Alice and Olivia to fast-fashion sites. Neon, a trend that was at its peak of popularity in the 80s, seems to be on the rise yet again.

Neon is a controversial trend, especially when it comes with a hefty price tag. Canada Goose has come out with a line of neon outerwear. To purchase a $800 bright yellow parka is certainly a risky move, given that a coat that expensive would likely become a staple in the owner’s wardrobe. Neon is hard to wear because it stands out and clashes with many outfits. Hence, it is definitely daring for Canada Goose to produce a line of coats that are only offered in neon shades.

Even the royals have hopped on the neon bandwagon are embracing this colorful trend. Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex (and Northwestern grad, duh) was seen wearing this vibrant ensemble. Even though she is pregnant, she continues to take fashion risks and disprove stereotypes about the proper and conservative way that members of the royal family should dress. This bright red coat and purple dress seem like an unlikely pairing, but Meghan makes the outfit work, per usual.

Neon has also been popping up on the red carpet. Model Chanel Iman wore this highlighter yellow dress to the WeWork Creator Awards Global Finals in Los Angeles on January 9. The dress was a showstopper, and a pair of matching neon yellow shoes completed the statement. This look, though risky, was done well, since the simplicity of the dress itself allowed the color to be the real showstopper.

But, you don’t have to empty your bank account to try out this trend. More affordable sites, such as Forever 21, have also jumped on the neon train. They offer many options, such as this bold bodysuit, and this fitted green midi-length dress. Sites like Forever 21 are great options if you are not ready to fully commit to such a bold trend, and would like to test the waters first.

The jury is still out on whether this flashy trend is here to last. However, neon’s iffy reputation hasn’t stopped it from coming back into style. When done right, neon can add flare to a simple outfit without having to try too hard. Neon is a fun way to brighten your mood during these tough winter days, so definitely give it a try!
