The weather, as confirmed by senseless grins and mindless small talk, is fantastic. The sun is out, the sky is clear, and what’s that? The lake, a feature so often taken for granted by Northwestern students, is putting postcards to shame.

Go to the lake up close and personal, in all its windy and thundering glory. Go to the beach. South beach, to be exact: the perfect spot to read while sinking your toes into the sand, to contemplate feeling the water and then think better of it.

This oft-forgotten spot is the best for when you’re longing for the east coast, for boat necks, for faded red sweatshirts with beach names on the front. For preppy without the Pulitzer, penguin logos or plaid shorts.

Go to this forgotten beach with a book, and forget that it’s required reading. Drag a metal folding chair to the water’s edge if you forgot to bring a beach towel to college, like I did. Bring a windbreaker. Leave your highlighter. Relax.
