Geek chic has taken over contemporary college student fashion in a way that is unavoidable. Especially on Northwestern’s campus, there is no shortage of perfectly pressed skinny jeans tucked into artfully tied combat boots, graphic tees printed with ironic slogans worn carelessly under a slightly rumbled blazer, and sweet silhouettes of vintage printed frocks. However, there’s a whole new group of style stars on campus rocking the same eclectic yet undeniably sharp look, and they’re definitely not living in the Virgin Vault of Bobb.

I would say that, objectively, the boys on Northwestern’s campus are very put together. Of course, there is the prerequisite amount of Northwestern apparel being sported, along with some very unfortunate combinations of sandals and socks or (I cringe) too short jeans. However, many boys at Northwestern dress like the true geeks that they are, and I for one think it’s completely endearing; not to mention there’s nothing better than a particularly smart pair of glasses.

If you’re looking to spiff up your look for the ladies, or your favorite Penguin polo is just looking a little ratty around the edges, pick up some off-the-beaten-path basics guaranteed to make you look just geeky enough.

Although I resent defaulting to Urban Outfitters, it is the holy grail of hipster-geek fashion. As a guy, try throwing casual Urban tees under a cardigan for an easy look for class. A pullover also works wonders for pulling together an outfit, especially if you’re slightly challenged in the style department. If you’re looking to up the ante, J.Crew has great classic options – try cashmere v-necks or even a distressed blazer to keep you warm as the temperatures drop.

As a last tip, guys, stick with simplicity when picking out your jeans. Stay away from acid wash, light wash, or anything overly distressed. Grab khakis, cords, or just jeans in a straight-legged dark wash to avoid looking like you’re stuck in the eighties. Levis or Gap’s 1969 line are both affordable options to round out your geek-chic look.
